When I recorded my 10-song album, "California," I took a thick folder of songs, and whittled them down to 20 or so.
This was for my first meeting with Pete Anderson, at his studio in Glendale, California. Eight of those songs were selected, and are included in the collection that was released.
Two others came later, during pre-production of the project.
After that meeting, and before the next -- five days later -- in a burst of reflected inspiration, I wrote two songs...the first track on the CD, "I'm Back," and the second track on the album, "Stoplight" at my home in Temecula, California, where I was living while working on the recording.
In terms of production and the studio, the trumpet is the lynch pin of this song's appeal as a studio track.
I don't have a trumpet in my band when I play live, so hearing this song on the record is really the way I intended for it to be heard. It is a double-horn recording by former Tonight Show trumpet player and member of Tower of Power, the amazing Lee Thorburg. Really brilliant performance and it is exactly what I wanted. Totally Americana.
Here's the video for the song, "I'm Back." It was filmed on the sand and in the beach side communities of Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside, in North County San Diego, California.
